When we say "representative task," we mean a
task which is
- important
(critical to using the product), and/or
- common
(performed by most of the representative users of your product),
and/or
- frequent
(performed frequently by a subset of representative users).
An example of an important task would be the
installation of a piece of software. If a user cannot perform this
task correctly, s/he will be unable to use the software unless someone
else assists with the task.
If your product were word-processing software, an example of a common
task would be formatting correspondence. It's not necessarily an
important task, or a frequent task, but it is a common task.
For a personal organizer product, recording names and contact information
would be a frequent task for any salesperson using the product.
Other users, such as college students or homemakers, might not use
this function very often, but it would be a frequent task for a
significant subset of the product's users.
